When you call 9-1-1 to report an emergency in southern Stafford County, Virginia, the 9-1-1 operator could send you an ambulance belonging to the White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad (WOVRS). Staffed entirely by volunteers, the White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad responded to 643 calls to 9-1-1 in the year 2001. In 2002, that number rose to 733. And in 2003, they responded to 879 calls for assistance.

WOVRS offers its services as a part of the Stafford County Emergency Medical Services system. They are a non-profit organization supported by the county government, the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, and by gracious donations from the community that they serve.

Stafford County is located on the "Capital Edge" halfway between Washington, D.C. and the state capital of Richmond, Virginia. With a size of some 277 square miles, Stafford county is still mostly rural, but certain areas, particularly northern Stafford county have developed rapidly in recent years. Home to more than 105,000 people in Stafford's 600+ subdivisions and neighborhoods, the population we serve is as diverse as anywhere. WOVRS is one of nine volunteer rescue squads serving the county. Their "first due" area comprises about 30 square miles of southeastern Stafford county. Depending on availability of other rescue squads, they also provide backup response to the entire county as well as King George county and the City of Fredericksburg.
